Believe it or not, I was practically a non-reader when I joined the Coast Guard at age
17. In fact, I
could probably count the number of books I had read up to that
time on one hand.
I grew up on the Island
of Maui in Hawaii and reading just wasn't important to
me. Besides the books in school were old and musty smelling
due to the dampness in the air, so I literally was allergic to
them.
All through college I was in
remedial English classes...until I met my wife Cathy. She is the best
teacher I've ever met. She not only helped me through college,
she introduced me

motivated to read. (And it also helped that we home-schooled our
kids, because I then had to really learn English just to
keep up with them.)
